What even is Vampire's Kiss?

Story

Vampire's Kiss tells the story of Peter Loew a literary agent who believes he is turning into a vampire after a one-night stand with a woman named Rachel.

Honestly, the story is not that weird. It sounds like it could be really introspective and weird and it only has one of those descriptions. Try and guess which one it is. 

Acting

The acting in this movie is absolutely wild. And I'm not sure if I mean it in a positive or negative way. I will say that it will keep you on the edge of your seat because Peter is an unpredictable character and Nicolas Cage is an unpredictable actor. It's one of those performances where I commend the actors around him because I would have been laughing the whole time. It's just so bizarre... Also, I am not 100% sure if he was British in this movie, he had a fluctuating accent and while it struck me as a little odd, everything made sense. 

This performance is a lot of things in one. It's funny, intense and very unsettling. And I think it is a testament to Nicolas Cage's acting ability because I don't know a lot of actors who could pull off a performance like this because there are so many things in this movie that made me question why I was watching this movie.

Writing/Direction 

I stated earlier that the story itself isn't weird, and it isn't, it's the way it is executed that makes it weird. There are so many creative choices that were made that I want to ask the director Robert Bierman about. Some of them questionable, some of them really clever. 

One story beat I realised at the end of the movie is that Peter our protagonist is an unreliable narrator. In retrospect, it is quite obvious but I only realised at the end of the movie after the incident at a club. It is also clear that Peter has issues with his mental health multiple times given his fragile emotional state and frequent and quite polarising mood swings. (also given the fact that he says some really bizarre things even before he believes he is a vampire)

I will say that I  am glad I finally know where this meme came from

CGI/Set Design 

This is not a movie where the CGI (it doesn't have any) or Set Design offers much for discussion. The most important thing about the Set Design is that is changes throughout the film to reflect Peter's changing mental state. 

Score/Soundtrack 

The soundtrack is also something I'm not going to dwell on for too long. Only because I didn't pay attention to it. I was paying attention to the far more bizarre things going on, on-screen.

Overall Thoughts

I considered doing this for my Terrible Movie Tuesday series that I do on my Instagram (which I will conveniently link here) but I decided to write a blog post about it, mostly to see if I could articulate my thoughts about into words and... I am struggling because this movie is a lot of things. I really sat there like this the whole time.

I am truly stumped with this one. Usually, I have a lot of things to say about movies but this is one of those rare times that I am truly speechless. It's not bad but I'm not going to say it's good either. It was an interesting movie for sure and I would say you should watch it at least once just to see this absolutely batshit piece of cinema (and I mean that in the best way possible)
